Bank worker steals from customers to pay debt

Bank worker steals from customers to pay debt A 24 year old bank worker from Aberdeen has been taking money from customers’ bank accounts to settle his student debt.

Mark Smith picked two elderly customers to embezzle money from and took more than £6,000 from a 91 year old war veteran and an 84 year old woman.

During his hearing, the bank worker broke down and showed extreme remorse for his actions. As a result, his sentence was reduced to 180 hours community service. Mr Smith also had to pay back the money that he had stolen from the two old people’s accounts including interest that the elderly customers would have accrued.

The bank worker stole in a desperate attempt to settle his student debt which needed to be paid immediately. He thought that the elderly customers would not notice the withdrawals.

However, 91 year-old, John Morrison quickly spotted that money was missing from his account and alerted staff at his nursing home. Upon investigation, the bank confirmed that money withdrawn from Mr Morrison’s account had been replaced with money from another elderly customer’s account. Upon checking, the bank could see that the signatures of the two old people did not match their originals and the bank worker was immediately questioned and dismissed from his position.
