Debt and the bible
Many people prefer not to seek guidance and comfort in God in times of need but some will be surprised to find that the bible is a great resource to turn to for bankruptcy and debt advice.
The good book instructs us to avoid tying a financial noose around our heads for property which is beyond our budget. This is demonstrated in Proverbs 22: 26-27, which says: “Do not be a man who strikes hands in pledge, or puts up security for debts; if you lack the means to pay, your very bed will be snatched from under you." This scripture shows that even in biblical times, people were struggling with debt.
The bible also warns against succumbing to the perils of debt and tells us that we should strive to live within our means. The two principle reasons why the bible condemns the use of credit cards is because they encourage the use of materialism as a means of therapy to enhance our mood. The second reason is because the reliance upon credit cards shows that we have little faith in God to help us during financial difficulties.
The only way to relieve ourselves from the slavery of debt is to ask God to help us to resist the temptation to spend unnecessarily. By admitting our weaknesses, we are able to fight them with stronger conviction. James 5:16 states: “Humbling yourself and confessing your struggles will move you towards freedom and healing.
The bible has over 2,350 verses on the subject of handling money and possessions and is worth taking a look at if you have fallen into debt.
Being in debt means becoming a slave to the debt collector as Proverbs 22:7 states: "Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender".
There are many legitimate debt advice companies who will help people view a more Christian approach to their finances and advise what can be done to resolve them.
