How do you cope with debt and the bailiff?

How do you cope with debt and the bailiff There is no doubt that bailiffs have three thoughts in mind - your money, your debt and how you are going to repay it.

With debt being one of the key problems among hundreds of families, bailiffs are increasingly overworked and are overwhelmed with a backlog of thousands of pounds of debt.

Firstly, it is better to seek debt help before your financial circumstances reach the hands of the bailiff by keeping the lines of communication open with your creditors. If you fail to reach an amicable solution, it is likely that your creditors will refer your debt to a debt collection agency. Failing to co operate could result in the court issuing a warrant for a bailiff to visit your home to collect a hefty cash payment from you or payment via credit card or debit card. A visit by a debt collector will also incur a fee.

Legally, it is possible for a bailiff to seize goods from your home by forced entry but he must be in possession of a warrant in order to do so. A bailiff can legally demand money for a debt that has resulted from a default, county court judgement or council tax.

If your goods have been seized by a bailiff, they will be sold to pay back some of your debt. Essential items such as clothing and bedding will not be removed.

It is strongly advised that you seek debt advice for any matters relating to debt recovery so as you can try to avoid losing some of your most treasured belongings.

If you are having debt problems then an IVA which stands for Individual Voluntary Arrangement is one of a portfolio of debt solutions available if you need help.
