The perfect debt collector
Debt collectors would do well to pick up tips from mothers who instinctively know how to approach a delicate situation and achieve the results they require without unnecessary pressure or threats.
Asking someone for money is always an awkward situation but approached correctly, positive results can be achieved with little effort.
If mothers were debt collectors, they would use the art of teaching, as a first measure. Each day, mums spend time teaching their children that there are consequences for their actions. Debt collectors would be well advised to do the same by explaining to clients that non-payment of a debt could result in letters or phone calls from creditors, a damaged credit rating and possibly a visit to court. They could also explain that creditors could even declare them bankrupt, if their debts get high enough. A few moments quietly going through these points may be just the trick to make the debtor see that their situation could become worse by not engaging in a regular payment regime.
Mothers are very sensitive with their children and debt collectors should feel the same empathy with their clients. If a child has done something wrong, he is usually embarrassed or angry. People with mounting debt feel the same. However, if a debt collector is sympathetic and understanding, he is much more likely to build a rapport with his clients and encourage them to adhere to fixed payments.
Mums also have the skill of being able to extract information from even the most stubborn of children, by asking simple detailed questions in a friendly manner. This could be invaluable when discussing debt with a client over the telephone.
By observing the way that a mother can communicate with her children, debt collectors could learn how to approach vulnerable debtors who are looking for help and guidance in their hour of need, rather than threats and humiliation. Far better results have been achieved from the hand of kindness than the rod of iron.
